Droopy Eyelid Correction (Ptosis Surgery)

Droopy eyelid correction surgery to improve eyelid position and overall eye appearance.

Medically reviewed by Dr. Ju-Chan Kim, Medical Director, IBON Plastic Surgery — trained in Plastic Surgery, Dong-A University Hospital; board-certified plastic surgeon.

Blurry, droopy-looking eyes can become clear and vivid. IBON Plastic Surgery's ptosis correction strengthens the muscle that opens the eye, improving a dull or sleepy-looking gaze and delivering a more satisfying result — with an even greater synergistic effect when combined with eye plastic surgery, and every case personally handled by the Medical Director from consultation through surgery.

What Is Droopy Eyelid Correction (Ptosis Surgery)?

Ptosis correction is a surgical procedure that improves upper eyelid elevation by adjusting the anatomical structures responsible for lifting the eyelid. When true ptosis is present, double eyelid surgery alone may create an eyelid crease without adequately correcting the underlying eyelid drooping.Strengthening the eye-opening muscle through ptosis correction allows the eye to open to its relatively fuller extent, producing a more beautiful and clearly defined eye shape than a crease alone can achieve.

AtIBON Plastic Surgery, ptosis correction is tailored to each patient's individual anatomy and eyelid function. Depending on the patient's condition, the surgeon selects the most appropriate technique, targeting the levator muscle, Müller’s muscle, or the common fascial sheath (CFS), to optimize surgical outcomes while minimizing the risk of complications. Because the amount of skin, muscle, and fat removed can be finely adjusted, this technique can also be performed as a standalone procedure without double eyelid surgery, and can produce various eyelid line styles — in-line, in-out-line, or out-line — depending on the patient's preference. Where skin incision is a concern, a non-incisional approach to ptosis correction can also be discussed during consultation, though the specific procedural steps for that option depend on individual assessment.

The surgical approach is determined by the severity of ptosis, eyelid anatomy, muscle function, and individual treatment goals. Both incisional and non-incisional techniques may be considered when appropriate.

  • Surgery time: about 30-60 minutes
  • Anesthesia: local anesthesia with brief sedation
  • Suture removal: after 5–7 days
  • Return to daily activities: after about 7 days
  • Can be performed as a standalone procedure or combined with double eyelid surgery for a greater combined effect

Who Performs Droopy Eyelid Correction at IBON Plastic Surgery

Dr. Ju-Chan Kim

Dr. Ju-Chan Kim, Medical Director
Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon in Korea

Dr. Ju-Chan Kim, Medical Director of IBON Plastic Surgery, personally oversees every ptosis correction case performed at the clinic. He completed his training in Plastic Surgery at Dong-A University Hospital and previously served as director at Zenith Plastic Surgery Clinic, Haneul Plastic Surgery Clinic, and The Goun Plastic Surgery Clinic. He is a member of the Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, the Korean Association for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the Korean Cleft and Craniofacial Association, and the Korean Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Clinics. Under IBON's single representative director system, his role at consultation is to assess the degree of levator muscle weakness and determine whether an incisional or non-incisional approach — alone or combined with double eyelid surgery — is appropriate, rather than applying a single default technique.

Droopy Eyelid Correction Options Available

Droopy eyelid correction techniques tailored to individual eyelid conditions and surgical needs.

Technique General Considerations Surgery Time Recovery
Incisional Ptosis Correction May be considered based on the severity of ptosis, eyelid anatomy, and muscle function. Can be performed alone or in combination with double eyelid surgery. 30–60 minutes (typically around 60 minutes) Suture removal: Day 5–7. Face washing is permitted after suture removal.
Non-Incisional Ptosis Correction May be considered depending on the severity of ptosis, eyelid anatomy, and muscle function. Suitability is determined during consultation. Within 30 minutes Sutures are usually not required. If present, they are removed on Day 3. Face washing is permitted from Day 3.

A closer look at the incisional approach:

Incisional ptosis correctionallows the surgeon to access and adjust the anatomical structures responsible for upper eyelid elevation. The specific technique is selected according to the patient's eyelid anatomy, muscle function, and degree of ptosis. The procedure follows four steps: assessing the eye before surgery, incising and removing excess skin and tissue, pulling and suturing the levator muscle to the appropriate length, and completing the correction. Because skin, muscle, and fat removal can be finely calibrated, the same procedure can produce an in-line, out-line, or in-out-line eyelid style, and the clinic's stated surgical experience is aimed at avoiding over-correction that would make the eyelid difficult to close.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Droopy Eyelid Correction?

  • Wants a double eyelid line that keeps coming undone or won't hold — often a sign that the underlying issue is weak eye-opening strength rather than the crease itself
  • Uses the forehead muscles excessively to compensate for difficulty lifting the upper eyelids
  • Eyelid droops down, giving a sleepy or drowsy appearance
  • Pupils aren't very visible, making the eyes look dull or dark
  • Previously had double eyelid surgery, but only a crease line formed without a real improvement in how open the eyes look

What to Expect: Procedure, Recovery, and Results Timeline

Stage What Happens
Consultation Degree of ptosis, levator muscle function, and eyelid skin/muscle thickness are assessed; incisional or non-incisional approach is discussed
Anesthesia Local Anesthesia with Brief Sedation
Surgery time About 30 ~ 60 minutes
Suture removal After 5–7 days
Return to daily activities After about 7 days

Note: The surgical technique, procedure time, and recovery period may vary depending on each patient's individual condition.

Post-operative care: cold compresses from immediately after surgery until swelling subsides; sleeping propped up on 2–3 soft pillows rather than bowing the head or lying face-down; avoiding excessive crying, hard eye-rubbing, or tightly squeezing the eyes shut; avoiding alcohol and smoking, which slow wound healing; avoiding contact lenses for about 3 weeks; light eye makeup only after about 2 weeks, with false eyelashes usable after about 1 month; and avoiding saunas or jjimjilbang for at least 3 weeks. Complications such as bleeding, infection, inflammation, or nerve damage can occur depending on the individual, so careful adherence to post-operative guidance is advised.

Ready to Discuss Your Droopy Eyelid Correction Options?

If your eyes look sleepy, dull, or never fully open no matter how rested you feel, the underlying cause may be the strength of your eye-opening muscle rather than your eyelid crease alone. A consultation with IBON Plastic Surgery's Medical Director gives you a clear, personalized recommendation — whether ptosis correction alone, combined with double eyelid surgery, or an incisional versus non-incisional approach — handled by the same surgeon from your first conversation through the procedure itself, without proxy surgery, so you can move forward with confidence in the plan chosen specifically for you.
